16 Up North small towns you need to visit this summer

Fishtown in Leland, Michigan

Sometimes, we have to escape the city for a long weekend and enjoy the beautiful outdoors Michigan has to offer.

For this map update, we’re all about the lakes. All but two of the small towns are on the shores of a Great Lake. Our only inland towns (appropriately, Houghton Lake and Houghton) have big lakes in the area to choose from.

Some may debate where “Up North” starts, but we’re beginning from the Zilwaukee Bridge just north of Saginaw on I-75. The map is organized south to north, with the farthest location around nine hours away. A few of these towns get pretty busy during the summer (Glen Arbor, Mackinac Island, Leland), while others are a little more laid back (Port Austin, Elberta).
